PRINCETON, N.J. – Five individuals from the University of Pennsylvania women’s squash team are competing in the College Squash Association Individual Championships at Princeton this weekend. The three-day event runs Feb. 27-March 1, with select matches being show on the Ivy League Digital Network ($). March 1 – Day Three
With no Penn women remaining in the CSA Individual championships the third day wrapped up on Sunday with Harvard’s Amanda Sobhy defeating Trinity’s Kanzy El Defrawy for the third consecutive year in the Ramsay Cup final.
Sobhy had defeated the Quakers’ Anaka Alankamony in quarterfinal action, while El Defrawy had topped Penn’s Marie Stephan, also in quarterfinal action on Saturday.
Feb. 28 – Day Two
On day two of the CSA Individual championships sophomore Anaka Alankamony and freshman Marie Stephan remained in pursuit of the Ramsay Cup.
Playing in the quarterfinals, Alankamony fell to three-time defending champion from Harvard Amanda Sobhy, 3-0.
Stephan faced two-time individual runner-up Kanzy El Defrawy from Trinity in the quarterfinals, putting up a stiff competition before falling 11-5, 11-5, 11-6.
In the second round consolation bracket, junior Yan Xin Tan fell in five games to Laila Samy from Wesleyan. Sophomore Michelle Wong was defeated in the first round consolation bracket by Trinity’s Julia Le Coq, 3-0.
In the Holleran Cup, freshman Ali Richmond continued her tournament defeating Princeton’s Kira Keating 11-7, 11-7, 13-11 advancing to the quarterfinals. In that match, Richmond fell to Natalie Babjukova from Trinity in five games, ending her run in the tournament.
Feb. 27 – Day One
Four Penn women began their pursuit for the top-flight Ramsay Cup on Friday, and two – sophomore Anaka Alankamony and freshman Marie Stephan – won their first two matches moving into the quarterfinals.
Alankamony defeated Stanford’s Zandra Ho, 11-6, 11-9, 11-8, in the first round advancing to play Trinity’s Raneem Sharaf, winning in five extremely tight games 9-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 11-4.
Playing in her first CSA individual championships, Stephan cruised to a 3-0 victory over Yale’s Shiyuan Mao, before defeating Laila Samy from Wesleyan 8-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-4.
Alankamony and Stephan will continue play in the main draw on Saturday at 11:15 a.m. and 12 p.m. respectively.
Junior Yan Xin Tan won her first round matchup over Stanford’s Sarah Bell, 3-0, before falling to Nicole Bunyan from Princeton in straight games in round two. Tan is set to play in the second round consolation bracket on Saturday, beginning at 2:15 p.m.
It was the second win for Bunyan over a Penn player, as she defeated sophomore Michelle Wong in round one, 3-0. In the first round consolation bracket Wong won her match over Bell from Stanford, 3-1, to advance.
