Women's Squash Defeats Dartmouth, 7-2; Finishes Season Ranked Fifth

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Penn women's squash team cruised by Dartmouth, 7-2, Sunday in the consolation final of the Howe Cup. With the win, the Quakers finish the season ranked fifth in the nation with a 10-5 overall record.

Two key individual wins highlighted Penn's performance, as freshman Alisha Turner beat Ashley Malanchak at No. 1 and junior Paula Pearson defeated Julia Drury, sister of Penn's Lauralynn Drury, at No. 2. Both matches featured top-20 players, as No. 14 Turner beat No. 15 Malanchak 3-0 (9-4, 9-4, 9-4) and No. 16 Pearson upset No. 9 Drury 3-1 (10-8, 9-7, 6-9, 9-2).

Radhika Ahluwalia was also a winner at No. 3, winning 3-0 (9-4 10-9 9-4) over Becca Loucks, while Elizabeth Kern wrapped up her stellar season with a five-set victory over Jess Tory, 3-2 (6-9, 6-9, 9-5, 9-6, 9-3) at No. 9. Caitlin Russell, Lauralynn Drury, and Emily Goodwin also picked up wins in the middle of the line-up for Penn.

"I was pleased with today's performance," said Head Coach Jack Wyant, who, in his second season, saw his team double their win total from a year ago. "We solidified our fifth-place ranking, and I think we're poised to do great things next year. Next year we'll have the opportunity to crack into the top four."

While Penn is finished with team play for 2005-06, the Quakers will compete individually in next weekend's CSA Individual Championships held at Amherst starting Friday.
