Women's Squash Downs Cornell, Middlebury

PHILADELPHIA – The CSA preseason No. 2 Penn women’s squash team picked up its first two wins of the season in its first day of opening weekend. The Quakers beat Cornell, 7-2, in the morning match and swept Middlebury, 9-0, in the afternoon.

The Quakers captured its first Ivy League in its win over the Big Red. At the No. 5 position, Alisha Turner battled through five sets against Lauren Sachvie to capture the win (3-9, 9-3, 9-5, 3-9, 9-3). Newcomer Taylor Booth registered her first collegiate win in three quick games, 9-7, 10-8, 9-2, over Clare Berner. Kristen Lange, Britt Hebden, Christina Matthias, Tara Chawla all disposed of their opponents in three sets in their respective positions in the ladder.

In the afternoon match the Quakers swept the Panthers, 9-0. All of the nine matches were decided in three games.

Head coach Jack Wyant was pleased with the team’s success in its opening day.

“This was a great way to begin the season,” he said. “The win over Cornell gives us our first Ivy League win this season – something we are looking forward to building on.”

The Quakers will be back Sunday morning to finish their opening weekend in a match against No. 6 Stanford at Ringe Courts. Matches will begin at 11 a.m.
