Women's Squash Falls to Harvard, 7-2, in Howe Cup Semifinal

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In the semi-final of the Howe Cup, No. 3 Penn women's fell, 7-2, to tournament host, No. 2 Harvard on Saturday. The Red and Blue will take on Trinity Sunday at 2 p.m for the match that decides the third-ranked team in the nation.

The Quakers were set to avenge their loss to the Crimson just a week ago that pushed Penn down to the No. 3 ranking, unfortunately Harvard also had its goals set on the Howe Cup Final. Harvard and Penn used a three-court system Saturday, beginning with slots 3, 6 and 9, with the Crimson sweeping all three. The first win came at No. 3 when Emily Park picked up a 3-1 decision over Alisha Turner. Turner won the first game, 3-9, before dropping the next two in close 10-8 decisions. Park finished the match with a 9-1 fourth game score. Annie Madeira fell to Bethan Williams in the same fashion as Turner. Madeira took the first game 10-8, before dropping the next three (10-8, 9-7, 9-3).

The Quakers picked up their first win in the No. 2 slot when Sydney Scott downed June Tiong in three games (9-6, 9-4, 9-5). The Crimson took the next two matches, No. 8 and No. 5, to guarantee them a seat in the Howe Cup Final. Kristen Lange registered Penn’s other win on the day as she swept Nirasha Gurgue in three games (9-3, 9-5, 9-2).

The Quakers will take on Trinity Sunday at 2 p.m. in the match that decides the No. 3 and No. 4 team in the nation. Trinity fell to No. 1 Princeton on Saturday afternoon, 5-4. The last meeting between the Quakers and the Bantams went in Penn’s favor, 5-4, which was highlighted by an exciting five-game match between Kristen Lange and Nour Bhgat at the No. 1 slot.
