NEW HAVEN, CONN. – The third-ranked Penn women’s squash team (13-3, 7-3 Ivy) earned some retribution on Sunday afternoon at the Howe Cup Championship. The Quakers defeated top-ranked Princeton (12-2, 7-1), 7-2, in the third-place match, dealing the Tigers’ their only Ivy loss of the season.
The Red and Blue dominated Princeton, just two and a half weeks removed from their 9-0 loss to the Tigers in New Jersey on Jan. 30. Penn has fallen to just two teams all season – the Howe Cup Champion Harvard (15-1, 6-1) twice, and Princeton.
The Quakers’ two losses against the Tigers came at positions one and six. Nabilla Ariffin fell to Julie Cerullo and Yarden Odinak was bested by Alexis Saunders, both in straight games.
The bottom of the ladder was the most even on the afternoon, with the No. 9 match won by Chloe Blacker in four tight games. Courtney Jones at No. 8 and Camille Lanier at position seven each one their matches in five games after falling behind, 2-0, early. Penn’s other four victories came as positions two, three, four and five, where it dropped just one individual game.
Rachael Goh earned her first win of the weekend, topping Nicole Bunyan in straight games at No. 3. Haidi Lala and Pia Trikha took four and five, respectably, each winning in three games. Yan Xin also defeated Elizabeth Eyre at the second position in four games.
With the win, the Red and Blue have completed 2012-13 team play. A few Quakers will compete one more time on March 2 when they travel to Hartford, Conn. for the CSA Individual Championships.
