Women's Squash Sees Undefeated Season End at Princeton, 7-2

PRINCETON, N.J. – A few days removed from identical, 6-3 wins over No. 3 Trinity on consecutive days, No. 1 Penn and No. 5 Princeton seemed pretty evenly matched coming into their match Wednesday night. However, the Tigers (5-0, 3-0 Ivy) came out a leg up in the Ivy League, defeating the Quakers, 7-2, at Jadwin Squash Courts and put a halt to Penn’s (6-1, 3-1 Ivy) undefeated season.

Freshman Britt Hebden and sophomore Alisha Turner picked up both of Penn’s wins. Hebden beat Gen Lessard at the No. 4 position, 9-3, 9-0 and 9-4. Turner also picked up a 3-0 win over Marilla Hiltz at No. 7.

The 7-2 score did not reflect the way Penn played. The Quakers had three matches go to four games and two more go to five. At the No. 1 position, Kristen Lange was in the driver’s seat after winning Game 1, 9-6 against Claire Rein-Weston. Lange fought tough, but lost three very close games (9-7, 9-6 and 9-7). Sydney Scott also put forth a valiant effort against Neha Kumar at No. 2. Scott lost the first game, but came back to take Games 2 and 3, 10-8 and 9-7. Kumar prevailed in the final two games, 9-4 and 9-3 to win the match.

Senior Paula Pearson showed how strong the top of Penn’s lineup is, taking Amanda Siebert to five games. Pearson came very close to taking the early advantage in Game 1, however, Siebert narrowly escaped, 10-9. Siebert won convincingly in Game 2, 9-0, but Pearson showed her resiliency by winning the next two games, 9-7 and 9-5 to force a fifth game. Siebert took the final game, 9-4.

At No. 8, Lauralynn Drury took Carly Grabowski to four games. Grabowski won a very close Game 1, 10-8. After another Grabowski win, Drury came back in Game 3, winning 9-3, but saw Grabowski win the fourth set, 9-2.

Penn is not in action again until Saturday, Feb. 10 against No. 4 Harvard at 1 p.m. The Quakers close out dual meet play the following day against No.6 Dartmouth at 11 a.m. Both matches are at Ringe Courts.
