ITHACA, N.Y. - Faced with an important Ivy League match in their first outing of the 2009-10 season, the Penn women's squash team captured the win Saturday afternoon in Ithaca, N.Y. The Quakers won by a score of 7-2.
Senior All-American Kristen Lange led the Quakers off with a 3-0 sweep at the top of the ladder. However, the Big Red came back to take two from Penn, including freshman Nabilla Ariffin's tough five-game battle. Ariffin dropped the the first two games 11-8, but bounced back to win the next two to force a tie breaker. Unfortunately, Cornell's Jaime Laird captured the victory for the Big Red's first of two on the afternoon. Senior Sydney Scottfell to Cornell's top-ranked player, Shivangi Paranjpe, to give the Big Red a 2-1 advantage.
However, Penn went on to win the final six matches with freshmen Rachel Goh and Yarden Odinak, and senior Britt Hebden winning their's in the No. 4-6 spots, and Annie Madeira, Pia Trikha, and Christina Matthias gaining victories in the bottom of the ladder.
Coach Jack Wyantwas encouraged by the win, stating, "We are very excited to get the season off to a positive start. Cornell is a much improved team and made us work hard for the victory."
Penn returns to action Wednesday December 2nd, hosting Franklin and Marshall at 7 p.m. at the Ringe Squash Courts.
