PHILADELPHIA – Prepared to kick off its 2014-15 regular season, the third-ranked University of Pennsylvania women’s squash team travels to Maine this weekend to face Bates and Colby on Saturday, followed by Bowdoin on Sunday.
Penn (0-0) is coming into the season with high expectations, and is looking get off on the right foot in this weekend’s opening matches after participating in Ivy Scrimmages on Nov. 8-9. Quaker senior Leslie Gill will serve as team captain this season, with the Quakers returning top performers sophomore Anaka Alankamony and junior Yan Xin Tan.
The Red and Blue will face No. 14 Bates (3-1) at 11 a.m. on Saturday, before facing No. 22 Colby (2-0) at 5 p.m. later that evening. On Sunday, the Penn women will square off against No. 19 Bowdoin (1-2) at 11 a.m. before returning home.

SCOUTING BATES: The Bobcats have a record of 3-1, after defeating Connecticut College, Wesleyan (Conn.), and Hamilton. Bates’ only loss has come to Trinity (Conn.) in their season opener. Senior captains Myriam Kelly and Lesea Bourke lead the Bobcats, both starting the season 3-1.
THE SERIES WITH BATES: The Quakers are 4-1 all-time against Bates, defeating the Bobcats 9-0 the last time the two programs met in 2012. Bates’ only victory over Penn came in their first matchup, a 5-4 contest in 2002.
SCOUTING COLBY: Starting the season 2-0, the Mules have wins over M.I.T. and Northeastern, 9-0 and 6-3 respectively. Six Colby players have won two matches to begin the season, led by No. 1 player freshman Devin Mullaney.
THE SERIES WITH COLBY: Penn and Colby have met four times, with the Red and Blue winning each matchup. The last time the two met was in 2002, with the Quakers winning, 7-2.
SCOUTING BOWDOIN: Beginning at 1-2, Bowdoin’s losses have come to Franklin & Marshall and Trinity (Conn.), while having defeated Connecticut College. Senior Sara Wlodarczyk has begun the season 2-1 in the No. 6 position, while senior Rachel Barnes leads the Polar Bears, playing in the No. 1 position.
THE SERIES WITH BOWDOIN: The Quakers lead the all-time series with Bowdoin 6-2, and have won the last four matchups. The last time the two schools met was in 2008, a 9-0 Penn victory.
PENN 2014-15 CAPTAIN: The Quakers women’s team will be captained by senior Leslie Gill for 2014-15. Last season, Gill went 9-4 overall and 4-1 in Ivy play. In the CSA individual Holleran Cup, she went 5-1, finishing as runner-up, to finish the season.
QUAKER NEWCOMERS: Penn welcomes six new faces to the women’s squash team in 2014-15, and will look to the newcomers to make an immediate impact. The new players are freshman Melissa Alves, Sara Coyne, Ali Richmond, Marie Stephan, and Lauren Wolf, and transfer Grace van Arkel. More information on the newcomers is available by clicking here.
