Women's Swimming Beats West Chester 164-111

PHILADELPHIA - The Penn women's swimming team earned 12 consecutive victories to open the meet as they took care of West Chester on Friday evening, 164-111.

The Quakers had nine different swimmers earn a first-place finish, highlighted by a pair from freshmen Katherine Ashenfelter and Shelby Fortin. Ashenfelter won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.57 and finished the 200-yard back in 2:07.23. Fortin recorded both of her wins in freestyle, winning the 50 and the 500-yard free. The first-year took the 50 in 24.19 and the 500 in 4:54.61.

Penn opened the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The foursome of Ashenfelter, junior Laura Klick, sophomore Melissa Parratto and Fortin finished in 1:48.30. Klick also won the 100-yard breast, taking the event in 1:05.06. Paratto earned an individual win as well, taking the 200-yard butterfly in 2:04.09.

Sophomore Blair Webb won the 1000-yard freestyle, touching in 10:26.60, while senior Naomi Delphin earned a win in the 200-yard free by finishing in 1:53.15. Senior Terren Niethamer also won, taking the 1-meter diving event with 247.28 points.

Juniors Samantha Husband and Jackie Hain rounded out the top finishes for Penn. Husband was victorious in the 100-yard free with her time of 54.00 while Hain won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:25.29.

Penn returns to the pool on Tuesday when they travel to take on La Salle at 5 p.m.
