Women's Swimming Drops Meet To Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Penn women's swimming and diving team dropped its second Ivy League meet of the season, with a 173-127 defeat at the hands of Columbia on Wednesday night.

The Quakers took five first place finishes out of 16 events, but kept it close with numerous swimmers finishing in the top three.

Senior Melissa Gardel opened the meet with a first place finish in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 241.06, while juniors Madeline Bauer and Siobhan Carey took second and third respectively. Bauer and Gardel flip flopped in the 1-meter with the junior taking top honors.

Junior Naomi Delphin won the 200 free by nearly a second with her time of 1:53.74, while senior Andrea Balint finished third. Balint won her own event, taking the 200 IM for the third time in as many meets with a time of 2:07.74.

Penn's final first place finish of the evening came from senior Lauren Brandes, who beat Allison Hobbs of Columbia by two one-hundredths of a second with her time of 24.42.

The Quakers return to the water on January 5, in North Miami Beach Florida, when they face among other teams, Ivy League foe Brown.
