Women's Swimming Finishes First Day of Preliminaries, Set for Finals

Preliminary Results

Cambridge, Mass. – The University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming and diving team completed the first day of preliminaries at the Ivy League Championships held at Harvard’s Blodgett Pool on Thursday afternoon.

The Quakers 200-yard freestyle relay team placed third with a time of 1:37.43. Tara Gillies, Jessica Aiello, Amy Ottensmeyer and Sarah Bargmann all competed. The relay team will be in lane three for the finals this evening.

The Red and Blue placed three swimmers in the top eight in the 500-yard freestyle. Margot Newcomer (4:55.53) placed third, Cameron Villarreal (4:56.82) fifth and Theresa Altieri (4:57.95) finished sixth. Lauren Bergstrom (11th, 500.22) and Nicole Malgeri (28th, 5:08.93) also competed.

In the 200-yard IM, Penn placed two in the top eight. Gillies (2:05.38) finished fifth and Alison Bretherick (2:05.93) took eighth. Ottensmeyer (2:07.90) finished in 14th, Erica Gentilucci (2:09.18) 18th and Megan Carlin (2:10.55) 21st.

Stephanie Colson (24.32) was the lone competitor from Penn in the 50-yard freestyle. She placed 14th and will swim in lane seven in heat two tonight. Penn placed sixth in the 400-yard medley relay at 4:03.76. Bergman, Lindsey Gottschalk, Lauren D'Erasmo and Laine Litman swam for the Quakers.

Janis Scanlon finished fourth in the 1-meter diving with a score of 249.05. Also competing for Penn were Kelly Tek and Kate McArdle.
