Women's Swimming Forges Ahead, Defeats Golden Rams

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Friday evening, the University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming and diving team defeated West Chester at Graham Natatorium, 187-107. The 11 event wins helped the Quakers to victory over the Golden Rams.

The Red and Blue started off with a bang, taking the top three spots in the 200 medley relay. The A squad – sophomore Madeleine Jardeleza, sophomore Lia Lombardi, sophomore Laine Higgins, and senior Bernadette D’Alonzo – won in 1:50.59, while the B and C teams followed at 1:52.48 and 1:54.41, respectively.

Junior Morgan Scott helped Penn to its second event win of the day, taking the title in the 200 free with a time of 1:54.80. Freshman Sydney Tan and Annie Tran then added wins of their own in the 100 breast and 200 fly. Tan defeated West Chester’s Kendall Somer by.32 of a second to win the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.50, while Tran finished almost two seconds before teammate Emma Siewert in the 200 fly at 2:09.51. Siewert finished in 2:11.44. Tan also added a second win in the 200 breast with a time of 2:20.86.

Both senior Irene Katopodis and freshman Maggie Heller added a pair of wins. Katopodis won the 50 free in 24.37 and the 100 free in 53.35, while Heller came away with a sweep in the diving events, posting a score of 243.60 in the 1 meter and 274.80 in the 3 meter.

Freshman Lauren Murski led the Quakers to a one-two finished in the 500 free with her time of 5:12.08. Siewert finished shortly after in 5:12.85.

Jardeleza, Higgins, and sophomore Rachel Swarts capped off the swimming events with a one-two-three finish in the 100 fly. Jardeleza finished in 59.37, Higgins came in at 1:00.07, and Swarts touched at 1:00.76.

Penn will look to claim another win against nonconference opponent La Salle on Saturday at Kirk Pool at 1 p.m. The meet with the Explorers will mark the last dual meet of the season and final event before the Ivy League Championships, Feb. 19-21.
