Women's Swimming Hosts UConn to Open 2012-13 Season

PHILADELPHIA - The women's swimming and diving team begins its 2012-13 season on Saturday when they host the Connecticut Huskies at Sheerr Pool. The meet will begin with the diving competition at 1 p.m. with the swimming set to commence at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Though the Quakers will have to make up for the loss of six seniors off of last year's team, they still retain many of their key contributors from 2011-12. Chief among them is first-team All-Ivy selection Shelby Fortin. Fortin, a junior, has won five Ivy League titles in her two seasons in the Red and Blue, and holds five individual school records in freestyle events. Two other juniors, Julia Anderson and Kristi Edleson, will mostly focus on the distance freestyle events.

Fortin isn't the only school record-holder to return for this year's squad, either. Sophomore Taylor Sneed had a fantastic freshman season and set a Penn record in the 100 Butterfly. Senior Melissa Parratto returns for her final go-round as the record-holder in the 200 Butterfly, while junior Katherine Ashenfelter holds the mark in the 200 IM.

Saturday marks the third year in a row that Penn opens its season with UConn. Two years ago at Sheerr Pool, the Quakers handed the Huskies a 171.5-126.5 defeat. Last year at UConn, the home team gained some revenge with a 161-139 win over Penn. Fortin and Sneed each won two events for Penn that day, with Ashenfelter and Parratto also notching victories.

While Penn will be making its debut on Saturday, UConn has already gotten off to a quick start. The Huskies will come down to Philadelphia with a 3-0 record courtesy of victories over Bucknell, Fordham and Army. A scheduled quad meet last week with three other Big East opponents was cancelled.

Penn is back in action next Friday when they host Cornell and Princeton in an Ivy League tri-meet at Sheerr Pool beginning at 3:30. All Penn home meets are free and open to the public.
