Women's Swimming Opens 2013-14 Season at UConn

PHILADELPHIA – To open the 2013-14 season, the University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s swimming teams will dive into competition against the Connecticut Huskies on Saturday at 1 p.m. The meet will take place in the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium.

In last year’s meet with the Huskies, the women secured a win at Sheerr Pool, 174-125. In hopes of another win, the Quakers will look to the return of senior Shelby Fortin, who competed at the NCAA Women’s Division I Swimming and Diving Championships and set five individual records at Penn last year.

Fortin was also a member of the record breaking 200, 400, and 800 Free Relays. The 200 and 400 relays were also raced by sophomore Emma Siewert, junior Christina Hurley, and sophomore Emily Baturka. Siewert, along with sophomores Sydney Stinner and Annie McCotter, competed in the 800.

Hurley and Baturka kept the relay records coming with senior Anne Maercklein and junior Lauryn Brown in the 200 Medley [relay]. Another sophomore who set records as a freshman is Lauren Church with her times in the 100 Fly and 200 Back.

Even though this is the first meet for the Red and Blue, the Huskies have already seen fellow Ivy institution Yale, in a non-scored meet. UConn hosted both Army and Villanova in separate events, following the meet with Yale. The season was officially opened when the Huskies hosted the Knights, two weekends ago, and won, 188-112. The following weekend was the matchup against the Wildcats, with the UConn winning a tightly contested one 159-140. The Huskies enter Saturday’s meet with a 2-0 record.
