- The University of Pennsylvania women's swimming team finds itself in seventh place after the first night of the Ivy League Championships despite three new school-record swims on Thursday at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.

Shelby Fortin absolutely dominated the field early in the day during the preliminary swim of the 500 Freestyle. The junior went a full six seconds lower than the second-place finisher in the race with a time of 4:41.52, setting her up for a big night in the final. Though that time was already a new school record, she bested it during tonight's final, touching the wall in 4:41.34 for her sixth career Ivy League title as well as a NCAA 'B' cut. Freshman Sydney Stinner swam a 4:52.87 in the 'B' final to place 15th, while Annie McCotter won the 'C' final in 4:51.73 to finish 17th.

Before that all happened, Fortin had already been busy, swimming the opening leg of the 200 Freestyle Relay. Her new school record of 23.17 in the first 50 helped relay teammates Emma Siewert, Christina Hurley and Emily Baturka to a fifth-place finish in a time of 1:32.41. That time erased a Penn record that had stood for 10 years in the event, lowering the record by nearly two full seconds.

Later, in the 50 Freestyle, Hurley and Baturka each produced times that would have been school records prior to Fortin's relay leg. Hurley finished 12th in the event, coming in at 23.33, while Baturka won the 'C' final in 23.43

Penn returns to the pool tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. with prelims in the 400 IM, 100 Butterly, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Backstroke, 3-meter diving and 1000 Freestyle. Those finals will then be contested that night along with 200 Medley Relay and 800 Freestyle Relay. The Ivy League will have free streaming video of tomorrow and Saturday night's finals in addition to meet results as they become available.
