GAMBIER, Ohio – The 2014 Total Performance Invitational hosted by Kenyon College is in the books and once again, the University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming team captured first place out of seven teams on Saturday evening. Closing out the invitational, the Quakers tacked on three more events on the last day en route to 2,635 total team points. Host Kenyon finished second with 1,574.5 points.
The Red and Blue claimed their final three event-wins right in a row, starting with the 200 back. Seeded with the fastest time after preliminaries, freshman Ryan Alexander finished on top in the finals with a time of 2:00.72, earning 36 points. Sister Megan Alexander, a junior, was the second Quaker to touch the wall, finishing fourth at 2:04.41, while senior Carly Gurick finished right after in fifth at 2:04.90. The two added 59 more points.
Following the 200 back, sophomore Rochelle Dong added another win for Penn in the 100 fly. Dong was also seeded as the fastest in preliminaries after clocking in at 54.65. In the finals, she touched the wall at 54.66. Senior Taylor Sneed’s time of 55.38 was good for third place. While Dong won the A-final, senior Lauryn Brown and freshman Carolyn Yang won the B and C finals. Brown won the B final in 56.61 and Yang won the C in 56.70.
Sophomore Ellie Grimes added on the third victory for Penn in the 200 breast. Not only did Grimes win the event, she erased the two-year old school record set by Laura Klick in 2012 (2:16.21) in addition to setting new pool and meets records with her time of 2:15.99. Her final time was exactly two second faster than her prelim time (2:17.99).
With the conclusion of the TPI, the Quakers will have some time off from competition. Before their next contest -- a tri-meet with Yale at Dartmouth on Jan. 10 -- the Red and Blue will make a trip south for their annual winter training.
