Women's Team Opens Home Campaign With Win over VCU

Philadelphia, Pa.– The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team defeated Virginia Commonwealth University, 5-2, on Saturday in the Levy Tennis Pavilion. The Quakers (3-1) took the doubles point and four singles matches in the win.

"This was a big home win," said Head Coach Michael Dowd. "It's a great way to open the home season against a highly-raned opponent. Julia (Koulbitskaya) and Shelah (Chao) stepped up at No. 1 doubles to win as a new team as well as both winning their singles matches."

The team of Koulbitskaya and Chao defeated Cristina Arribas and Olga Borisova at No. 1 doubles, 8-6. The Quakers clinched the doubles point with Raluca Ciochina and Michelle Mitchell's 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles over the team of Marianna Yuferova and Camille Ripert. Caroline Stanislawski and Kate Williams fell, 8-6, at No. 3 doubles to Viktoria Konstantinova and Vera Petrashevitch.

In singles competition, Koulbitskaya defeated Yuferova, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1. Yulia Rivelis fell to Borisova, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 and Chao won at No. 3 by defeating Arribas, 7-5, 6-4. Mitchell won at the No. 4 position, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (5), over Konstantinova while Ciochina fell to Petrashevitch, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5. Sara Schiffman won at No. 6, 6-2, 6-1, over Ripert to close out the win for the Quakers.

The Quakers are next in action on Saturday, Feb. 26 when they host Maryland in the Levy Tennis Pavilion at 10 a.m.
