Women's Tennis 67th in First ITA Spring Rankings

PHILADELPHIA – The Penn women's tennis team begin the spring season at No. 67 in the ITA rankings, which were released on Jan. 6. In addition to team accolade, junior captain Ekaterina Kosminskaya is ranked No. 10 in the East, while the duo of Kosminskaya and Alexa Ely is ranked No.12 in the East and No. 54 in the nation for doubles.

Kosminskaya is headed into the spring season following an impressive fall. Kosminskaya made it into the round of 16 at the ITA East Regional before falling to Lauren Cash of Boston College. Kosminskaya also collected impressive wins at the Princeton Invitational and the annual Cissie Leary Invitational hosted by Penn.

The team of Kosminskaya and Ely is new for the 2008-09 season, but that did not impede success. In their first tournament, they captured the doubles title at the Cissie Leary. At the ITA East Regionals, the No. 4 seeded team won their first round match, 8-6, to Liebschner/Verow of Seton Hall before falling out in the second round when they were defeated by Harijanto/Popescu of Buffalo, 8-5.

The Red and Blue are one of thee Ivy teams that received a national ranking. Princeton, the highest ranked Ivy, took the No. 61 spot, while Yale is ranked No. 71.

The Quakers will begin the spring season in late January, when the team heads to Virginia to play Old Dominion on Jan. 31 and Norfolk on Feb. 1.
