Flight A Singles Bracket
Flight B Singles Bracket
NEW YORK, N.Y. - Women's tennis capped off a very successful second week of fall tournament play at the Columbia Invitational this past weekend. The Quakers captured all three of the draws, including both singles draws and the doubles draw. Freshman Sol Eskenazi made her collegiate debut in style as she captured the Flight A Singles draw with three consecutive straight-set victories. Freshman Alex Ion, making her second consecutive fall tournament appearance did the same in Flight B Singles. In doubles, Jaime Yapp-Shing teamed up with Eskenazi to take the doubles.
In singles, Eskenazi lived up to the billing of the top seed as she ran off three consecutive victories in her first collegiate action. In her first action, she cruised to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Columbia's No. 2 from last season, Katarina Kovacevic. In the semi's, Eskenazi was forced into a first set tiebreak before taking that set and following it up with a 6-3 win in the second to move onto the finals. In the finals, she allowed just three games to Nevena Selakovic from Saint John's, winning 6-1, 6-2, to capture the Flight A Singles championship.
Freshman Srinidhi Raghavan, competing in her second collegiate tournament, also competed in Flight A Singles. Although she did not have the success of Eskenazi, she played each and every one of her three opponents close. In the quarterfinals, she dropped a tight 6-4, 6-3 match to Selakovic, who advanced to the finals against Eskenazi. In her second match, she again lost her first set 6-4 and fell 6-0 in the second set to Columbia's No. 4 from a year ago, Ioana Alecsiu. In her final match, Raghavan fell in the first set, 6-3, before tying the match up with a tight 7-5 victory in the second set. Her tough luck weekend would continue in the third set with a 6-2 loss.
In Flight B, Ion followed a similar path to her classmate Eskenazi. Like Raghavan, she was playing her second tournament of the fall and like Eskenazi she was seeded first in the draw. In her quarterfinal match, she picked up her second 6-0, 6-0 victory of the fall to move into the semifinals. From there, she defeated Columbia's No. 5 from last season, Tiana Takenaga, 6-0, 6-1. In the finals, she capped off her tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 victory as she conceded just four games in three matches all weekend long. She is now 4-1 in singles this fall.
In doubles action, Yapp-Shing teamed up with Eskenazi to complete the Penn sweep of all three first place matches. In their first action together, the Penn duo took down their Columbia counterparts in a convincing 8-2 quarterfinal win. In the semifinals, Eskenazi and Yapp-Shing faced another Columbia pairing and would get out to the early 5-2 lead before their opponents retired from the match. In the finals, the pairing picked up another convincing win, this time by an 8-3 tally over Fairfield's Yajima and Ryan.
Also competing in doubles were Ion and Raghavan. In their first time playing together, the Penn freshmen picked up the hard-fought 9-8 (4) victory in their first match to move into the quarterfinals. In the next round, Ion and Raghavan fell 8-1 to Yajima and Ryan, the pairing that would end up finishing the doubles draw in second place. In their only consolation match, Ion and Raghavan finished out the tournament strong with an 8-4 win over Hofstra's Gilanchi and Tsay.
The Quakers' weekend tournament trail comes home this week as Penn hosts the annual Cissie Leary Invitational. The invitational will begin this Friday and continue through Sunday.
