The Penn women's tennis team finished competition at the 2004 Women's College Tennis Invitational held at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. Freshman Yulia Rivelis defeated Nida Waseem of Boston College in the first round of the "A" flight singles, 6-1, 6-2 andAngela HendryofColumbia in the second round, 6-1, 7-8 (4)before falling to Kim Coventry of Kentucky, 6-1, 3-6 (11-9).
FreshmanJulia Koulbitskaya won her first round match against Texas A&M's Anna Lubinsky, 6-3, 6-4 before losing in the second round of the "A" flight singles toJolle Schwenkof Kentucky, 6-4, 6-0. Koulbitskaya also competed in the second consolation round, falling to Vlatka Jovanovic of Arkansas, 6-3, 6-3.
In the "B"flight singles, senior Shelah Chao defeated Amy Morgenstern of Army, 0-6, 6-2 (10-6) in the first consolation round. She then defeated Caitlin Collins of North Carolina, 7-6 (5), 6-2. Junior Raluca Ciochina defeated Tawna Allen of Arkansas, 7-5, 6-2 in the first round, Sara Anundsen of North Carolina, 6-1, 6-3 in the second round, Anna Blagodarova of Texas A&M, 6-2, 6-3 in the third round before falling to Melissa Anderson of Harvard, 4-6, 6-4 (10-7).
Freshman Michelle Mitchell and junior Caroline Stanislawski competed in the "C" fight singles. Stanislawski, the fourth seed in the flight, defeated Elin Stahl-Johansson of NC State, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round and Mollie Edinson of Cornell, 6-2, 6-3 in the second round before falling to Amanda Saientz of Brown 3-6, 6-4 (10-7). Mitchell defeated her first round opponent, Danielle Stadelmann of NC State, 6-3, 6-0 and her second round opponent, Nisha Suda of Cornell, 6-1, 7-6 (3), before falling to Jenna Long of North Carolina.
In the "D" flight singles, junior Sara Schiffman and senior Kate Williams both fell in the third round. Schiffman, the No. 2 seed in the flight, defeated Andrea Nieulescu of Penn State, 7-6 (4), 6-0 in the first round and Lydsey Nott of Army, 6-0, 6-1 before falling to Caroline Winesbrenner of Kentucky, 2-6, 6-3. Williams defeated Stephanie Berg of Princeton, 7-6 (4), 4-6 (10-4) and Diane Alquero of Army, 6-3, 6-1 before losing to Michelle Paitier of Brown, 2-6, 6-2 (10-8).
Sophomore Arrabella Martin and Ashley Lostritto both competed in the "E" flight singles. Martin advanced to the semi-finals, defeating Catja Carrell of Dartmouth, 6-0, 6-3, Cheri Lapano of Boston University 6-3, 6-4 and Molly Condt of Columbia, 7-5, 6-1before falling to Laura Trimble of Princeton 6-4, 6-1. Lostritto lost in the first round to Lindsay Downing of Penn State, 6-2, 1-6 (10-2). She also competed in the consolation rounds of the flight, defeating Maddie Long of Georgetown, 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles action, the seventh-ranked team of Koulbiskaya and Mitchell advanced to the semi-finals of the "A" flight. They knocked off Koon/Gutierrez of South Carolina, 8-5, Collins/Tansill of North Carolina, 8-0 and Foster/Maurer of Kentucky, 8-4 before falling to Anderson/Durkin of Harvard 8-5. The team of Chao and Rivelis lost in the first round to Chu/Mukunan of Harvard, 8-5. They then participated in the consolation round, where they lost to Marable/Schaub of Tennessee, 8-4 and Balasa/Elder-Bush of Rutgers.
The Quakers will have one week off to preparebefore hostingtheITA East Regional Oct. 22-24.
