Women's Tennis Competes in California

The Penn women's tennis team finished competition at the 2004 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships Qualifier in Pacific Palisades, Calif.Freshman Yulia Rivelis defeated Judy DeVera of USC in the first round, 6-2, 6-0 and Tara Simpson ofWashington in the second round, 6-2, 6-3 before falling to Helena Besovic of TCU, 6-3, 6-3.

FreshmanJulia Koulbitskaya won her first round match against Washington's Stephanie Svanfeldt, 6-2, 6-0 before losing in the second round to Lolita Frangulyn of Florida, 6-3, 6-3. Fellow freshman Michelle Mitchell was defeated in the first round by Samantha Walker of Cal Poly, 6-1, 6-4.

Senior Shelah Chao advanced to the third round before being defeated.Chao defeated Jacqueline Haskett of Fresno State, 6-4, 6-3in the first round and won her match with UC-Riverside's Michelle Beyronneau, 6-3, 6-1 in the second. Chao fell to Kristin Cargill of Duke, 6-0, 6-2 to finish the tournament.

The Quakers will have one week off to prepare for theUSTA NTC Invitational in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. on Oct. 15-17.
