Philadelphia - The No. 56 University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team defeated Columbia, 5-2, on Saturday evening in the Levy Tennis Pavilion in its final home contest of the season. With the win the Quakers take sole control of second place in the Ivy League.
Penn opened the match by sweeping all three doubles matches to take the point. The team of Julia Koulbitskaya and Shelah Chao defeated Miriam Rahali and Angela Hendry, 9-8, at the No. 1 position. Yulia Rivelis and Michelle Mitchell took the match at No. 2 with an 8-2 victory over Kendall Murphy and Kara Worsley while Caroline Stanislawski and Kate Williams finished the Ivy League season with their fifth League victory, an 8-4 win over Milena Kachar and Eunice Chao.
In singles action, Kachar defeated Rivelis, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, while Koulbitskaya fell to Hendry, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, in the second position. At No. 3, Mitchell continued her winning ways with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, victory over Rahali and Chao closed out her Ivy League career with a straight-set, 6-1, 6-2, victory over Worsley at No. 4. Stanislawski defeated Molly Condit, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 5 and Williams wrapped up her Ancient Eight career with a 6-4, 7-5, victory over Kristin Martinez in the sixth position.
