Long Beach, Calif.-- The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team defeated Long Beach State, 5-2, on Monday afternoon at the Campus Courts. With the win, the Quakers improved to 5-2 on the season.
The Quakers opened the match by droppingtwo of three double matches to win the doubles point. The deciding match came at No. 2 doubles as the 49ers Alanah Carroll and Rachael Porsz held on for a 9-8 (7-4) win over Raluca Ciochina and Michelle Mitchell.At No. 1 doubles, Julia Koulbitskaya andShelah Chaofell to Nicole Bouffler and Sandra Rocha, 8-3.Penn won the match at No. 3 as Caroline Stanislawski and Kate Williams won 8-2 over Nicoletta Ratiu and Stephanie Bengson.
In singles play, two nationally-ranked players faced off at the No. 1 spot. No. 17 Yulia Rivelis fell to No. 85 Nicole Bouffler, 6-4, 6-2, for Long Beach's lone singles win. At No. 2 singles, Koulbitskaya, who is ranked No. 81 in singles, defeated Bengson, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 and at No. 3 singles Rocha fell to Chao 6-3, 6-7, 6-0. The third singles match to go three sets came at the No.5 spot as Ciochina rallied for a 6-0, 1-6, 7-6 win over Porsz. Mitchell won at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 7-6, and Stanislawski defeated Ratiu, 7-6, 6-1, in the sixth spot.
The Quakers will next be in action on March 9 when they take on William & Mary in Las Vegas, Nev. at 10 a.m.
