PHILADELPHIA -Completing a perfect homestand and picking up its fifth win in a row, the University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team defeated Maryland, 5-2 on Saturday. The win is the Quakers' first as a ranked team in 2016, as they earned the No. 65 spot earlier in the week.
Penn dominanted the doubles matches, with Kana Daniel and Sonya Latycheva strolling to a 6-2 win and Ria Vaidya and Marta Kowalska breezing to a 6-1 result.
Daniel continued her dominance on the singles side, improving to 4-0 on the season. Daniel needed a tiebreaker to win the first set, but rolled to a 6-1 result in the second.
Vaidya returned to the lineup after a few weeks away and gave the Quakers the decisive point. Vaidya worked a 6-4 win in the first set before closing out the match with a 6-3 win.
Lina Qostal used two sets to settle her match. Qostal won her first set 6-1 with relative ease, but had to come back from 3-0 down in the second to win 7-5.
Marta Kowalska was impressive once again. The freshman won her two sets 6-1 and 6-4.
Penn will head to the Lone Star State for four matches during spring break. The first will come on March 6, against North Texas.
