University Park, Pa., The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team defeated Penn State, 5-2, on Friday. Three singles matches went to four sets, with the Quakers (1-1)taking two of those as well as the doubles point.
The Quakers started the match by takingthe doubles point in dominating fashion, winning all three matches. The team of Julia Koulbitskaya and Michelle Mitchell defeated Maaria Husain and Sarah Spence, 8-6. At No. 2 doubles, Yulia Rivelis and Shelah Chao defeated Katelyn BeVard and Sasha Abraham, 8-2 while Caroline Stanislawski and Kate Williams defeated Andreea Niculescu and Jenny Schular, 8-6, at the number three position.
In singles competition, Julia Koulbitskaya defeated Husain, 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-0 at the No. 1 position. The Quakers won the next three matches. Yulia Rivelis defeated Spence, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2, Chao defeated Abraham at thenumberthree position, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(3)while Raluca Ciochina won at No. 4, 6-4, 6-2, over BeVard. The Quakers only losses of the day came at the final two singles positions. Stanislawski fell to Niculescu, 4-6, 6-1, 10-7 at No. 5 and Sara Schiffman fell to Schular, 2-6, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.
The Quakers are next in action on Saturday, Feb. 12 when they travel to the University of Virginia for a 7 p.m. start.
