PHILADELPHIA - Returning home from a week-long trip in Texas, the University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team extended its winning streak at Hecht Tennis Center to six with a 5-2 win over St. John's. Penn improves to 7-6 on the season and will start it's Ivy League schedule next weekend.
Penn began the day by taking two doubles matches to earn the opening point. The pair of Kana Daniel and Sonya Latycheva, who currently hold the No. 67 ranking in the ITA, were impressive again in a 6-3 win. Penn's top team is 10-2 this season. Lina Qostal and Luba Vazhenina were also 6-3 winners, helping the Quakers get out to a 1-0 lead.
Penn's individual wins all came from the bottom of the ladder, picking up wins in the three-six spots. In the third position, Lina Qostal battled to a three-set, tie-breaker win. Qostal won the final set 7-6 (5).
Freshman Marta Kowalska made quick work of her opponent in the fourth position with two sets ending in 6-2 and 6-3 scores.
O.J. Singh picked up the decisive fourth point for the Quakers with a two-set win. Singh needed a tie-breaker in her first set, but ran away with a 6-3 win in the second.
Luba Vazhenina also needed a tie-break in her first set and also won that tie-breaker to help her to a two-set win for another point for the Red and Blue.
A rarity this season, Penn's top player Daniel was defeated and in two sets for the first time of the season. Daniel fell 6-4 and 6-2 for just her second loss of the season.
Penn will head to Princeton next Saturday to start its Ivy League campaign.
