LONG BEACH - Another stop on the California swing for Penn and another 4-3 loss to a ranked team. This time, it was Long Beach State that edged the Quakers in Long Beach on Thursday afternoon.
The 49ers started the match with a 2-1 advantage in doubles to secure the doubles point. The team of Maria Anisimova and Charlotte Tansill were victorious for Penn, defeating Stephanie Jeanes and Jessica Weekes, 8-7 (3).
LBSU won the first two singles matches to finish, at No. 4 and No. 5, to extend its lead to 3-0. Ekaterina Kosminskaya defeated a ranked opponent for the second match in a row when she defeated #72 Hannah Grady in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in No. 1 singles.
A win at No. 3 by Deborah Armstrong sealed the match for LBSU.
Yulia Rivelis (No. 2) and Alexa Ely (No. 6) added the final two wins for Penn.
The Red and Blue finish their West Coast trip on Saturday with a match at the University of San Diego at 3 p.m. EST.
