Women's Tennis Falls to Princeton 6-1 in Ivy Opener

Penn Women’s Tennis on Facebook

PHILADELPHIA – The Penn women’s tennis team (8-4, 0-1 Ivy) saw its run for its best start since 2007 halted by Princeton (9-4, 1-0) at the Hamlin Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon, 6-1. The Quakers dropped the doubles point after winning just one of three, and later dropped singles as well, winning one of six.

Doubles play was extremely completive in the second and third flights. After Penn’s No. 32 duo of Sol Eskenazi and Sonya Latycheva (10-1, 1-0) took care of business quickly at first singles, defeating Joan Cannon and Emily Hahn, 8-5, things became tightly contested. The next match to end was at third doubles, where Stephanie Do and Alex Ion (4-2, 0-1) fell in tiebreak, 9-7, to Monica Chow and Katie Goepel. Second doubles between Katherine Jania and Jaime Yapp-Shing (0-1, 0-1) and Katherine Flanigan and Lindsay Graff ended in a 9-7 tiebreak in favor of Princeton as well.

After dropping a tough doubles point, the Quakers need four of six in singles to win the match but unfortunately were only able to come away victorious at third singles. Latycheva (9-2, 1-0) bested Chow in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, and has now won her last seven matches.

The first match to finish was at first singles where Eskenazi (8-3, 0-1) fell in straight sets to Graff. Emma Whitfield (4-4, 0-1) was next to complete her singles play, falling at sixth singles in straight sets as well. Latycheva would finish next, followed by Jania (6-4, 0-1) dropping her match at fifth singles in straight sets. Do (8-4, 0-1) was defeated at second singles in straight sets in the second to last match to be completed. The last match of the day between Ion (5-7, 0-1) and Goepel at fourth singles was the longest of the afternoon, but Ion would eventually fall in three sets, dropping the final one in an eight-game tiebreaker.

The Quakers will be back at Hamlin next weekend for two Ivy League matches on April 5 and 6. Brown will be first up for Penn on Friday in a match scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. followed by Yale on Saturday, also at 2 p.m.
