Women's Tennis Falls to UC Irvine, 5-2

PHILADELPHIA – The No. 40 Penn women’s team fell to 6-2 overall this season, with a 5-2 loss to UC Irvine on Monday.

The Quakers were swept in doubles, as Becky Bernhard and Clare Fermin beat freshmen Maria Anismova and Ekaterina Kosminskaya, 8-6, in the No. 1 spot. At No. 2, juniors Julia Koulbitskaya and Yulia Rivelis lost to Inna Agababian and Jessica Broadfoot, 9-8. And at No. 3, Lenka Snajdrova and Michelle Mitchell lost to Ali Borowicz and Jayme Hu, 8-4.

Penn had two wins in singles, at No. 1 and No. 6. Kosminskaya had a big win over Bernhard, who is ranked No. 81 in singles nationally, 7-6, 6-0. And sophomore Lauren Sadaka won at No. 6, 6-4, 2-1, ret. over Borowicz.

At No. 2, Rivelis lost to Agababian, 6-3, 6-4. Koulbitskaya suffered her first singles loss of the season in the No. 3 spot, as she lost to Fermin in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Anismova played at No. 4, and lost to Heidi Kaloi, 6-4, 6-2. And junior Michelle Mitchell lost in the No. 5 singles spot to Broadfoot, 6-3, 6-4.

Up next, the Quakers will take on No. 58 Long Beach State, March 7 at 2 p.m.
