PHILADELPHIA – Fresh off a successful fall season, the University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis team will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the ITA Kick-Off weekend. As one of the top 60 teams in the country, the Quakers will have a chance to make the Sweet 16 if they can get past two very tough opponents.
As the fourth-ranked team in its group, Penn will face the No. 1 seed Alabama on Saturday. The Crimson Tide are ranked 15th in the country and possess two players in the top 40. Those two players are Maya Jansen and Erin Routliffe who are just the second pair to ever win back-to-back NCAA doubles titles.
The winner of Penn and Alabama will take on the winner of No. 40 Texas and No. 45 Purdue for a chance at going to the ITA National Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis. on Feb. 5. The losers of both matches will also play a consolation match on Sunday.
Penn hasn’t competed since Oct. 8, when they faced Georgetown. They have had great contributions from senior Sonya Latycheva, junior Kana Daniel, and freshmen Marta Kowalska and OJ Singh who all had impressive fall seasons.
