Philadelphia,Pa. -- The University of Pennyslvania Women's Tennis team completed their first dayas the hosts of the Wilson/ITAEastern Regional Tennis Championships.
In singles action, freshman Janet Comenos defeated Cindy Chu of Harvard, 6-3, 6-4. Fellow freshman Michelle Mitchell defeated Nada Curcia of Bucknell 6-1, 6-2, while junior Caroline Stanislawski defeated Viviana Figuerosa of Seton Hall, 6-2, 6-2. Junior Raluca Ciochina defeated Jen Fowler of Manhattan, 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the round of 64. Three Quakers, freshmen Julia Koulbitskaya and Yulia Rivelis and senior Shelah Chao, recieved byes into the next round, to be played Sunday.
In the first round of doubles action, the team of senior Kate Williams and Stanislawski defeated Apostu-Efremov/Bachner of Long Island, 8-5. Rivelis/Chao defeated Theis/Percival of West Virginia, 8-2, andKoublitskaya/Mitchell defeated Figuero/Isaza of Seton Hall, 8-3. Ciochina/Comenos lost to Mukundan/Wang of Harvard, 8-1 for the Quaker'sfirst loss of the day.
In the second round of doubles action, Williams/Stanislawski lost to to Muth/Wei of William and Mary, 8-4 while Rivelis/Chao defeated Al-Shikarchy/Grenier of Niagra, 8-0. Koulbitskaya/Mitchell also won their second round match, defeating Simcki/LoRusso of UConn, 8-4.
The second round of singles and the third round of doubles will take place on Sunday. The Wilson/ITA Eastern Regional continues until Tuesday.
