Women's Tennis Loses Heartbreaker to George Washington, 4-3

PHILADELPHIA - The Penn women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to George Washington University in a grueling five hour match Friday evening at the Levy Pavilion. The Quakers fell to 2-5 on the season, while the Colonials improved to 5-3.

It all came down to the No. 5 singles match between freshman walk-on Emma Whitfield and GW's Zoe Krohn. Whitfield took the first set 7-6 after winning the tie breaker 13-11, but Krohn tied it up with a 7-5 win in set two. With both teams giving full support to their teammates on the sidelines, Whitfield and Krohn traded games in the third ending in Krohn's tiebreaker win, to clinch the match for the Colonials.

In doubles play, GW earned the point with wins in the one and two spots, including Krohn and Mimi Hamling's 9-8 win over Emily Wolf and Alexa Ely. The duo of Daniela DePaoli and Whitfield topped the Colonials 8-0 at the No. 3 position.

Wong earned her first win of the spring with a 7-6, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles. Ely won her match 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1, while DePaoli topped her opponentin dramatic fashion at the No. 3 spot. Down a set, DePaoli won the second, 7-6, after a tiebreaker, and the third 6-2 to even the match, three all, setting up the intense showdown between Whitfield and Krohn.

The Quakers are back in action Sunday when they host Bucknell at noon.
