PHILADELPHIA – Penn’s struggles in California have continued, as the Quakers lost for the second straight match, this time a 5-2 loss to Long Beach State.
In doubles action, the No. 19 doubles squad of Maria Anismova and Ekaterina Kosminskaya lost to Stephanie Bengson and Katy Williams, 9-8 in the No. 1 spot. Juniors Julia Koulbitskaya and Yulia Rivelis won in the No. 2 spot, 8-3, over Jessica Weeks and Hannah Grady. But the 49ers won the doubles point with a win in the No. 3 spot, as Sandra Rocha and Rachael Porsz beat Penn’s Michelle Mitchell and Lenka Snajdrova, 8-5.
Kosminskaya and sophomore Lauren Sadaka had Penn’s only singles wins of the day, as Kosminskaya beat Williams, 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 1 spot, and Sadaka beat Porsz, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6. Koulbitskaya lost at the No. 2 spot to Grady, 6-0, 6-1, while Rivelis lost at No. 3 to Bengson, 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Anismova lost at No. 4 to Weeks despite winning the second set, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. And junior Mitchell had a tough loss at No. 5, a 7-5, 6-1 defeat at the hands of Rocha.
Up next, the Quakers will take part in the University of San Diego tournament. They open play March 10 at 9:30 a.m., against the hosting team.
