PHILADELPHIA - The women's tennis team suffered their first loss of the season today, a 5-2 defeat at the hands of No. 12 VCU. But the Quakers came back strong, with a 5-0 win over Georgetown later in the day.
The VCU Rams were Penn's highest ranked opponent so far this seaosn, and it played out that way. The Quakers had a good fight to start the match, as they won all three doubles for the point, but Penn fell apart in singles, and ended up losing, 5-2. Freshmen Ekaterina Kosminskaya and Maria Anismova won at No. 1 doubles over VCU's Marianna Yuferova and Olga Borisova, 8-7 (7-4). Junior co-captains Yulia Rivelis and Julia Koulbitskaya won at No. 2 over Vera Petrashevitch and Tatsiana Uvarova, 8-4. And Lenka Snajdrova and Amanda Avedissian made it a sweep in doubles, as they beat Viktoria Konstantinova and Maria Klokotzy, 9-8 (7-5). But the singles matches didn't come as easily for Penn. Kosminskaya suffered only her second loss of the season, to Uvarova, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Rivelis also won one set, but it wasn't enough for the match, as she lost to Yuferova, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Koulbitskaya had the team's only singles win, as she beat Klokotzky, 6-4, 4-6, 3-4, ret. Snajdrova continued her struggles in the No. 4 spot, as she lost to Borisova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Anismova also fell in the No. 5 spot, as she lost to Konstantinova, 7-5, 6-4. And junior Michelle Mitchell also lost in the No. 6 spot to Petrashevitch, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

As soon as the Quakers wrapped up their noon match with VCU, they turned around to play Georgetown at 4 p.m. Instead of a regular match format, the teams decided on a 4-1 match-up, with only one doubles team playing, and four singles points. The Quakers won easily, 5-0.
Avedissian paired up with senior captain Ashley Lostritto for the doubles match, when Penn won over Adriann Gin and Briana Kearney, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (12-10). It was Lostritto's first match action of the year. Rivelis had an easy win in the No. 1 singles spot, as she beat Courtney Olson, 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Lauren Sadaka beat Georgetown's Stephanie Cohen, 6-2, 6-2, while junior Charlotte Tansill beat Elizabeth Winokur, 6-3, 6-1. And freshman Jacqueline Wong made her match debut for Penn in the No. 4 spot, and beat Kelsey Darnell easily, 6-1, 6-1.
