William & Mary Tribe Invitational Brackets
PHILADELPHIA - The women's tennis team will get the fall portion of its schedule underway this weekend as the team travels to the William & Mary Tribe Invitational, which begins Friday and continues through Sunday. Action will begin at 9 a.m. each day. The invitational features 10 teams and is broken down into five singles flights and two doubles flight. In addition to Penn and the hosts; Columbia, James Madison, Old Dominion, Richmond, Tulane, VCU, Virginia Tech, and Winthrop will all be at the tournament this weekend.
Nine members of the women's tennis team will take part in the invitational this weekend in singles play and Penn will enter four doubles pairings into the tournament draw. A young Quaker squad will feature just one senior and two juniors, but three representatives from both the sophomore and freshman classes.
In singles, Jaime Yapp-Shing won 15 matches a season ago and will look to improve upon that mark during her sophomore campaign. Junior Emma Whitfield finished her season last year with 11 wins, including a 5-4 record during the fall. Sophomore Lauren Bridges also reached double-digit wins last season with a 10-9 overall record in her freshman campaign. Fellow sophomore Stephanie Do won nine matches in her first year at Penn, while the lone senior on the squad, Daniela DePaoli, won eight matches a year ago.
Jules Rodin was limited to primarily doubles competition a season ago, but did manage to pick up one win in singles after missing the entire fall season with her injuries. Freshmen Sol Eskenazi, Alex Ion, and Srinidhi Raghavan will make their collegiate debuts in a Penn uniform this weekend at the William & Mary Invitational.
In doubles action, Penn will send out four pairings. All three of the freshmen will be playing doubles and will have experience on their side as they have been paired with returning players. Yapp-Shing and Eskenazi will play together. Yapp-Shing went 12-12 in doubles last season, playing primarily with Rodin in the spring, but also spent some time with her classmate Do. Raghavan will have the opportunity to open up the season with Do this weekend. Do won 11 doubles matches last season, finishing the spring with Whitfield as her partner. She also spent time playing alongside Yapp-Shing and Rodin.
The third freshman, Ion, will be playing alongside the aforementioned Rodin. Despite missing the fall season, Rodin still managed to win six doubles matches in the spring and will look forward to a healthy season where she can play both singles and doubles. The final pairing features two returning players in Bridges and Whitfield. Bridges saw limited doubles action last season, while Whitfield picked up six doubles wins in the spring after playing just one doubles match in the fall. Bridges and Whitfield did have the opportunity to play together in two team matches last spring and they went 1-1, winning 8-1 at No. 3 doubles against Drexel.
Of the players entered this weekend for Penn, only Do played in the William & Mary Invitational last year. In what was her collegiate debut, Do lost to the second seed in her flight, before falling in a 10-point tiebreak in the third set of her consolation round match.
Players from Richmond will not be able to compete and were forced to default do to a mandated campus activity. They will rejoin the tournament on Saturday in the consolation brackets. Five singles players, Yapp-Shing, Raghavan, Do, Rodin, and Ion all advanced past their Richmond opponents by default, while Bridges and Whitfield recieved a default victory in doubles.
Friday's action will include two rounds of doubles and one round of singles. On Saturday, two rounds of singles and one round of doubles will be played. Championship matches will then be played on Sunday.
In addition to nightly recaps on PennAthletics.com, William & Mary will be providing updated brackets throughout the weekend.
