Women's Tennis Outlasted by Brown, 5-2, on Friday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second straight Ivy League match, the University of Pennsylvania women’s team has won the doubles point, yet has been unable to transition that momentum into singles play, as the Quakers were defeated by Brown, 5-2, Friday afternoon in Providence, R.I.

The Penn women (7-6, 0-2 Ivy) got off to another fast start, with its No. 1 duo of Sol Eskenazi and Sonya Latycheva rolling in their doubles match 8-3, while Kana Daniel and Jaime Yapp-Shing were victorious in the No. 2 position, 8-5.

In singles play the Quakers got their only match victory from freshman Luba Vazhenina, in a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the fourth position.

Even with just the one singles match victory, Penn did not go quietly against the Bears (1-5, 1-0 Ivy). Latycheva and senior Stephanie Do forced tiebreakers in their first set, and both pushed their match to a third set before ultimately falling.

Up next for the Quakers will be No. 52 Yale on Saturday in New Haven, Conn. The Bulldogs fell in their Ivy opener against Princeton on Friday, 4-3. Penn and Yale’s match will begin at 2 p.m.
