PHILADELPHIA The Ivy League has announced its All-Ivy teams for the 2006 women's tennis season, and four Penn players have been recognized. The teams are voted on by the conference's eight head coaches.
Sophomore Yulia Rivelis and Julia Koulbitskaya earned first-team singles. Rivelis went 4-3 in Ivy play at the No. 1 position. This marks her second first-team selection in as many years. Koulbitskaya went 5-2 in the Ancient Eight playing at No. 2 singles. As a freshman, she earned second-team singles.
The duo also earned first-team doubles. The sophomores went 5-2 in Ivy play. They paired up for the first time in the spring at UC Irvine and meshed instantly, winning their first three matches together and eight altogether. Last season, Koulbitskaya teamed with Shelah Chao to garner second-team doubles.
Also earning recognition in doubles were Raluca Ciochina and Alexis Plukas. They were named honorable mention, going 5-2 in the Ancient Eight at the No. 2 position.
Under 10-year veteran head coach Michael Dowd, Penn went 12-5 overall and 6-1 in the Ivy League. The Red and Blue’s record was impressive enough to earn the program’s second at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and fourth under Dowd. The Quakers face No. 30 Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at 2 p.m. at Georgia Tech.
