PHILADELPHIA - Women's tennis saw its program take huge strides forward last season and will look to continue that forward momentum in 2011-12. Penn will certainly be tested this season as the schedule features seven opponents that finished last year ranked nationally. The Quakers will have the early opportunity to host Maryland and travel to Florida International in competition against two of those teams. These matches highlight the non-conference portion of the schedule that will look to prepare Penn for the always difficult Ivy League schedule that features five teams that were ranked a year ago. This will also be a very exciting season on campus for the team as it will be the first chance to play at the Hamlin Tennis Center, which is located in the brand-new Penn Park.
The fall portion of the schedule features several familiar tournaments that the Quakers took part in last season. They will get the year underway at the William & Mary Invitational, which goes from Sept. 9-11. Penn will also travel to the Columbia Invitational, which will take place from Sept. 16-18. After these two tournaments to start the season, Penn will have a chance to showcase the state-of-the-art Hamlin Tennis Center as it hosts the Cissie Leary Invitational from Sept. 23-25.
The ITA All-America Championships will be held from Sept. 29-Oct. 7 for any players that have qualified. The Quakers are also scheduled to take part in the Saint Joseph's Fall Invitational (Sept. 30-Oct. 2) and National Tennis Center Invitational (Oct. 8-11) this fall. ITA Regionals will take place from Oct. 21-25 and qualifiers from this tournament will travel to New York City for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Tennis Championships from Nov. 3-10.
The spring portion of the schedule will get underway with a home match against cross-campus rival Drexel on Jan. 8. Two weekends later, Penn will travel to the VCU Invitational for three matches from Jan. 20-22. Following the return from the invitational, the Quakers will host Richmond (Feb. 11) and Maryland (Feb. 12). Last season, Maryland finished the year ranked 34th in the country. The next weekend, the team will travel to State College, Pa. for a pair of matches. It will open up the weekend against Penn State on Feb. 17 and then take on Tulane Feb. 18.
After returning from State College, the Quakers will host Buffalo on Feb. 25 before heading to Florida over spring break. During its stay in Florida, Penn will take on Stetson (Mar. 6), Florida Gulf Coast (Mar. 7) and Florida International (Mar. 8). Returning to Penn, the Quakers will then host Temple in the cross-city match on Mar. 21 in final preparations for the Ivy League portion of the schedule.
Ivy League play will get underway for Penn on Mar. 31 when it travels to Princeton. The following weekend, Penn will make the journey north to the defending Ivy League champions Yale on Mar. 6 and continue the weekend with a match against Brown on Mar. 7. The home portion of the Ivy League season will get underway on Apr. 14 when Harvard comes to Philadelphia. Dartmouth will be the second weekend opponent when the Big Green visits town on Apr. 15. In the final weekend of Ivy League play, Penn will host Cornell on Apr. 20 before traveling to Columbia for the regular-season finale against Columbia on Apr. 22.
Last season, Penn won eight matches under Sanela Kunovac, who is beginning her third season as the head coach of the women's team. This past spring, Penn started out the year winning four of its first six matches and closed the season with a pair of Ivy League wins against Cornell and Columbia. The Quakers will return seven letterwinners from that young team a season ago, while welcoming three new incoming freshmen.
