PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis team was recently selected to participate in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) 2016 Kick-Off Weekend running January 23 and 24.
"Being selected to participate in the Kick-Off weekend for the first time, marks an exciting new time for our players and program," said Head Coach Sanela Kunovac.
Based upon ITA rankings from the previous season, Penn was selected to participate in the nationwide opening weekend of the season tournament.
On the 2015finish Kunovac said, "The selection is a testament to the dedication and fight our players showed throughout this past spring, and it's fitting that our seniors are leaving behind a history-making legacy, after being an unshakable foundation for the team during the past four years."
The Kick-Off Weekend features 15 host sites made up of four competing teams. The winners from these national sites will meet in February for the ITA Division I National Team Indoor Championships held at the University of Wisconsin.
For the opening weekend round, Penn will travel to the University of Alabama, along with Texas, and Purdue. The No. 4 seed Quakers will open with the host No. 1 seed Crimson Tide, while No. 2 Texas will face No. 3 Purdue. The winners will advance to the final the following day, with the losing teams playing a consolation match.
The 2016 ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournament will be the first the Quakers have participated in, with the event beginning in 2009. To visit the tournament website, please click here.
