PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team is shipping up to Boston this weekend, sending its best to compete in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships. Harvard’s Murr Center will host the event from Oct. 17-22; the regional will feature competitors from 35 different schools from all over the Northeast.

In singles play, four Quakers qualified for the main draw, while two otherswill compete in the qualifying draw in an attempt to join their title-hungry teammates in the main draw. Main-draw competitors include junior Sol Eskenazi, sophomore Sonya Latycheva, and freshmen Kana Daniel and Luba Vazhenia.

Eskenazi is no stranger to singles play at ITA’s, already having advanced to the Round of 32 and the Round of 16, respectively, in her first two years. Latycheva, Daniel, and Vazhenia will all be making their ITA singles debuts. (Latycheva has competed in ITA’s before, of course, bringing home the doubles crown with Eskenazi as her partner last year.)

While the main-draw bracket has yet to be released, the qualifying draw seeds Penn’s Jaime Yapp-Shing No. 1 overall, with teammate Stephanie Do also in the running at No. 11.

The Quakers also willhave three pairs to the doubles competition, where the team saw its greatest success last year. Last year’s championship pair of Eskenazi and Latycheva is split up this year, with Eskenazi teaming up with Yapp-Shing as the No. 2 seed while Latycheva joins Daniel. Do and junior Alex Ion will also compete for Penn.
