Women's Tennis Shut Out by No. 6 Georgia Tech, 4-0

ATLANTA, Ga. – After a thrilling 4-2 win over No. 30 Tennessee on Friday, the No. 45 University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis team's dream of another upset was halted by No. 6 Georgia Tech in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Penn was shutout by the Yellow Jackets 4-0 on Saturday. The match was delayed an hour because of rain, and once doubles play got underway at 1 p.m. rain fell again and forced the remainder of the match indoors.

Penn was simply overmatched in doubles. Georgia Tech won the point, winning at No. 1 and 3 doubles 8-1. At No. 3 doubles, Alison Silverio and Kacie Anson defeated Caroline Stanislawski and Michelle Mitchell. Kristi Miller and Lyndsay Shosho, ranked No. 10 in the country in doubles, clinched the point for the Yellow Jackets over Julia Koulbitskaya and Yulia Rivelis. Raluca Ciochina and Alexis Plukas were trailing Kelly Anderson and Whitney McCray 6-3 at No. 2 when the point was clinched.

The Quakers certainly had their work cut out for them in singles, facing four ranked players from Georgia Tech including Miller, the No. 1 ranked player in the country. Since the match was moved inside, which only had three courts, Nos. 1-3 singles were played first.

At the No. 3 spot, Silverio blanked Mitchell in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead. The next match to end was No. 1 singles. In that match, Miller defeated Rivelis 6-2, 6-2. The Quakers had their backs against the wall as it came down to No. 2 singles. However, Georgia Tech managed to close out the match in straight sets again asShosho defeated Koulbitskaya 6-3, 5-2 to clinch the match.

Penn finishesthe season 13-6 overall. The Quakers won the program's third NCAA Tournament match on Friday with a 4-2 victory over Tennessee.
