Women's Tennis Splits Opening Matches at VCU Invitational

The Penn Quakers opened the VCU Invitational dropping a tough match to the host VCU, 4-1, but rebounded against Norfolk State, winning 5-0. Because this is a 4-1 Invitational, the teams are only playing one doubles match and four individual matches. All five of these matches count directly into the final team score.

In the first match of the day against No. 31 VCU, Penn got a dominating performance from Connie Hsu in the number one position as she won 6-0 & 6-1. However, this would be the only match that Penn would take on the day as it would drop the remaining three singles matches and the only doubles match.

In the afternoon match against Norfolk State, Hsu once again dominated as she did not allow a game to her opponent in the 6-0, 6-0 victory. This time she was joined in the action by the rest of the Quaker team who was nearly as dominating as she had been. Freshman Stephanie Do picked up the victory at number two singles, winning 6-0, 6-1. Daniela DePaoli won her number three match 6-1, 6-1, while Emma Whitfield won 6-0, 6-0 in route to the number four victory.

In Doubles competition, senior Alexa Ely, who was making her spring season debut, teamed up with freshman Jaime Yapp-Shing. The duo won the doubles match 6-0, 6-1 completing the matinee sweep for the Quakers.

The Quakers will play UNC Wilmington tomorrow to finish up the tournament. This will be no easy competition for Penn as UNC Wilmington swept every match today against Norfolk State and Hampton University. The UNC Wilmington match will take place at 10 a.m.
