Women's Tennis Suffers First Loss at Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – Playing in its first road match of the spring season, the University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis team was edged by Old Dominion, 4-3, Sunday afternoon in Virginia.

The Quakers (3-1) were able to capture their fourth straight doubles point of the spring, when senior Sol Eskenazi and junior Sonya Latycheva won 6-4 in the first position, and sophomore Kana Daniel and freshman Ria Vaidya won 6-3 in the second position. Senior Alexandra Ion and freshman Lina Qostal, playing in the third match, were tied 5-5 when play was halted.

Leading 1-0 heading into singles play, Penn managed to claim just two matches against the Monarchs (4-3).

Sonya Latycheva won her fourth straight singles match of the spring, winning in three sets in the No. 2 position 0-6, 6-2, 6-4, and in the sixth position Alexandra Ion won in three sets 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-4.

Two other matches went into a third set, with Qostal and Vaidya pushing their opponents before falling in the fourth and fifth positions.

Penn returns home to Philadelphia and will have a week before its next match, taking on neighbor Drexel at 12 p.m. inside the Hecht Tennis Center on Feb. 22.
