PHILADELPHIA - Penn won every singles and doubles match Friday night to take the 7-0 victory against cross-town rival Saint Joseph's. The Quaker's win gives the team more victories than it had all of last season. The victory also gives Penn (5-4) a perfect 3-0 mark against Philadelphia schools this season.
Penn started off the night with two quick victories in doubles action. Jules Rodin and Jaime Yapp-Shing went through their entire match without surrendering a game at the number two doubles position. Shortly after, Alexa Ely and Connie Hsu wrapped up the doubles point for Penn with an 8-1 win at the top doubles position.
With the doubles point already assured, Emma Whitfield and Rose Schlecker completed the doubles sweep with their victory at number three. However, their victory would not come nearly as easily as the first two wins on the night. Whitfield and Schlecker jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead and looked to be on the verge of clinching the sweep early, but Saint Joseph's battled back to 7-4. Penn's duo would let it get no closer than that, winning the next game and taking the match 8-4.
In singles play, Daniela DePaoli, playing number four, and Whitfield, playing six, only surrendered one game in their entire match picking up two key victories for Penn.
Three more Quakers would only surrender two games throughout their matches. Hsu, Yapp-Shing, and Lauren Bridges all were impressive in their victories. Hsu and Bridges each won their first set 6-0, before taking the second 6-2. Yapp-Shing surrendered just one point in each of her sets.
The toughest match on the night came in singles for Penn came at the number two position. Ely picked up a hard fought 6-4 win in the first set. Then things got a little easier as she won the second set 6-2 to close out the match sweep for Penn.
The Quakers will have one more match in the Levy Pavilion next Wednesday against Binghamton before the team heads to Florida for Spring Break competition.
