Women's Tennis Takes Part in William & Mary Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – The Penn’s women’s tennis team openedits 2006 fall season at the 14th annual William& Mary Invitational today in Williamsburg, Va. The three-day tournament features players from all over the country,including schools such as Arkansas, Boston College, Maryland, Marshall, North Carolina, Old Dominion, Purdue, Richmond, Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth, Virginia Tech, and the hosts from W&M.

The Quakers had a good showing in first-round action, with only one loss on the day.

In the Flight A singles bracket, junior Yulia Rivelis (San Francisco, Ca.) of Penn lost a hard-fought battle to #92 Mallory Voelker of Purdue, 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-3

In Flight B singles, Penn junior Julia Koulbitskaya (Locust Valley, N.Y.) defeated Amanda Rales of Virginia, 6-4, 6-3.

In round one of the Flight C singles, Charlie Tansil of Penn defeated Hanes Harris of UNC, 6-3, 6-1.

In Flight B doubles, junior Michelle Mitchell and Tansil beat Jessica Brouwer and Ashley James from Virginia Tech, 8-2.

Second-round action continues tomorrow, with the first matches kicking off at 10:45 a.m. The tournament concludes with Sunday finals in all brackets.

William and Mary Invitational Bracket
