PHILADELPHIA – The No. 37 women’s tennis team improved their record to 6-1 today, with a 5-2 win over No. 33 Maryland. The Quakers lost the doubles point, but won in five of the six singles spots, to take the victory.
In doubles, juniors Yulia Rivelis and Julia Koulbitskaya lost to Eleanor Peters and Marianne Baker in the No. 1 spot, 8-4. In the No. 2 spot, junior Michelle Mitchell and Ekaterina Kosminskaya beat Michal Amir and Maggie MacKeever, 8-7. And at No. 3, Lenka Snajdrova and Amanda Avedissian lost to Elyse Steiner and Lisa Miller, 8-4.
Wins in all but the No. 4 singles spot clinched the win for Penn. At No. 1, Kosminskaya beat Baker, 6-3, 6-1, while Koulbitskaya defeated Peters in the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 6-7, 6-2. Rivelis won in the No. 3 spot, 7-5, 6-1 over Amir, while Mitchell won in the No. 5 spot over MacKeever, 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Lauren Sadaka earned a win in the No. 6 singles spot, as she beat Miller, 6-2, 7-5. The only loss for the Quakers came at the No. 4 spot, as Steiner defeated Snajdrova 6-0, 6-3.
This was the last home match for the Quakers until March 31, when they’ll host Princeton at noon. Up next, Penn will travel to California for a string of matches, the first of which is at No. 43 UC Irvine, Monday, March 5 at 1:30 p.m.
