WILLIAMSBURG Penn scored a big win on Saturday when it defeated No. 62 Marshall, 5-2, in Williamsburg, Va.
A win of the doubles point got the day started for Penn. The 24th-ranked team of Julia Koulbitskaya and Ekaterina Kosminskaya won a tight 8-6 match over the 23rd-ranked pair of Isabell Raich and Thaddea Lock at number one doubles. Penn also won number three doubles when Michelle Mitchell and Charlotte Tansill defeated Jessica Keener and Yulia Kashelkina, 8-6.
Marshall won the matches at number one and number two singles, but the depth of the Quakers’ team propelled them to the win. All four women from number three to number six won straight-set matches.
The two matches that Penn did lose in singles each went three sets. Kosminskaya lost to No. 60 Kellie Schmitt, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 3-6 and Yulia Rivelis lost at number two singles, 3-6, 6-4, 7-10 to Karolina Soor.
