Women's Tennis Welcomes Four Newcomers

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis team is proud to welcome four new members to the program this fall.

The Quakers welcome three freshmen in the Class of 2018 and one transfer student from Miami University in Florida.

The four newcomers will help bolster a Red and Blue lineup that went 8-10 overall last spring, and 1-6 in Ivy play.

Nicole Berkman
Hometown: Highland Park, Ill.
High School: Highland Park

Lettered four years in tennis … Served as team captain as a senior … Helped lead team to conference and sectional championship in singles and doubles in 2013 … Named all-conference as an individual in 2013 … Participant in the 2012 Central Suburban League Leadership Conference.

Coach Kunovac says … “We are very proud to have Nicole on the team. She is a goal-oriented, hard worker, that does everything she can to help make her teammates better. She has a very solid ground stroke and a good volley.”

Lina Qostal
Hometown: Rabat, Morocco
High School: Lycee Descartes

Played club tennis for USCM Rabat … Ranked as the No. 2 junior player in Morocco … Represented Morocco in the 2013 Fed Cup … Semifinalist, finishing in third place at the African Junior Championship in 2013 … Played as a wildcard entry in the 2013 Grand Prix Lalla Meryem WTA event … Represented Morocco in the Junior World Cup in the Czech Republic in 2011 … Participant in the Nike Junior Tour in the Bahamas in 2010.

Coach Kunovac says … “Lina comes with a lot of international experience, and is the second best player in her country. She is going to be an impact player in singles and doubles right from the start, and we are really happy to have her here.”

Winner of the Singapore U-12 National Championship at the age of 10 … Winner of the U-14 National Championship at the age of 11 … Semifinalist of the U-18 National Championship at the age of 12 … Won the Nairobi International Junior Championship in singles … Won the Macau ITF Junior Championship singles title … Participant in the 2014 Australian Open Juniors … 2013 Singapore ITF Junior Championships Doubles Finalist … ITF Junior Circuit Colombo Doubles Finalist in 2013 … 2012 Dhaka International Junior Tournament Doubles Winner … ITF Junior Circuit Colombo Week One doubles winner in 2012 … Summit Planners Singapore ITF 2012 Junior Championship doubles finalist.

Coach Kunovac says … “Ria is a very dynamic lefty, with a big forehand, and a very good game. She has a very infectious attitude, and is a wonderful addition to our team.”

Hometown: Delray Beach, Fla.
High School: Boca Raton Community

Transfer from Miami (Fla.) University … Helped Hurricanes to ACC regular season title and spot in the NCAA Sweet 16 as a freshman in 2013-14 … Hurricanes were ranked as high as #9 in the ITA polls during the regular season … Helped Miami qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships … Selected to the President and Provost Honor Roll in the 2013-14 academic year.

Coach Kunovac says … “We were familiar with Victoria from the recruiting trail, even before her freshman year. I love that she is one of the hardest workers I’ve seen in college tennis. She has a lot of potential in both singles and doubles, and is a tremendous addition to our team.”
