Women's Track and Field Has DMR Reach ECAC Qualifying Time

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - A second-place finish propelled the distance medley relay for the University of Pennsylvania women's track and field team to an ECAC qualifying time at the Penn State Open in State College, Pa., on Saturday.

Penn's distance medley relay team nearly defended its event title from a year ago when they set the meet record. Penn and West Virginia ran away from the rest of the competition as no other school was within 10 seconds of either team. Penn was unable to surpass its Big East opponent, but did post its best time of the young season with an ECAC qualifying mark of 12:04.11. The Quakers' 2008 relay team holds the Penn State Open record with a time of 11:32.61.

There were also several near misses for the Quakers in the early-season meet.

In the 500-meter run, junior Laura McDaniel was a second away from reaching the ECAC standard. Her finish of 1:17.05 placed her seventh in the event. Sophomore Kali Strother was less than a half second off the qualifying time with a 22nd-place finish of 25.63 in the 200 meters.

Senior Whitney Tagliavini, who has already reached a postseason mark in the long jump, finished fourth in the event with her best leap coming on her last attempt. She reached 5.61 meters (18 feet, five inches).

Junior Kathryn Gevitz was sixth in the triple jump at 11.48 meters (37-08 ft.) and freshman Kristen Judge was eighth in the high jump at 1.60 meters (5-03 ft.).

The Quakers are to compete at the Great Dane Classic in New York City Friday at the historic Armory Track and Field Center.
