Day One Recap

GREENSBORO, N.C. - As the final competitor remaining for the University of Pennsylvania women's track and field team this season, senior Kathryn Gevitz finished her 2010 campaign in the NCAA East Preliminary Round at North Carolina A&T's Aggie Stadium in Greensboro, N.C., Saturday.

In the final field event of the entire meet, Gevitz finished 47th in the triple jump. Entering the meet, Gevitz was the 48th seed and after the first round of jumps she was in 32nd place. The top 12 advanced to compete in the finals of the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 9-12.

On that first jump, Gevitz landed at 11.36 meters (37 feet, 3 1/4 inches). She bested that mark on her next attempt, improving her mark to 11.51 meters (37-09.25 ft.). That leap would remain her best as she fouled on the last jump. In a deep field, Gevitz would have needed to set a personal best in the event to advance to Saturday's finals as well as the NCAA Championship finals.

The effort capped a tremendous senior season and four-year career for Gevitz. The 2010 team co-captain was the only member of the Red and Blue to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Round in two events. She also became the first Penn woman to win won both the indoor and outdoor Heptagonal triple jump titles in the same year since Ruth Greenfield did so in 1991.

The 2010 Academic All-Ivy recipient was a three-time All-Ivy honoree and two-time All-East selection. She finishes her career as the school record holder in the outdoor long jump, third all-time in the outdoor triple jump and fourth all-time in the indoor triple jump.
